Roger Castuciano, a Filipino immigrant, had to give up his law career because of his broken English, becoming a night-shift guard instead. Years later, when he suffered a stroke, his son Rey, also an immigrant, spent six weeks visiting him in a nursing home filled with socially isolated elders. Determined to do something, Rey started Table Wisdom to pair English-speaking older adults with college-age immigrants for conversation in person or via Skype. Older adults remain socially active; new immigrants gain an older, wiser mentor, while improving their English — and career prospects. Over the next two years, Table Wisdom plans to match 500 older adults with immigrant youth. Table Wisdom has plans to expand nationwide.
