Critical Bridge

Office of Mayor Sam Liccardo

2017 Judges’ Prize winner, The Encore Prize

The San Jose Mayor’s office has taken the needs and talents of the young and older to heart, integrating multigenerational programming citywide. San Jose Works and San Jose Promise — two new public-private partnerships — provide youth from low-income, first-generation and historically underrepresented communities with summer work internships and a pathway to community college. Both are adding 50+ mentors to be matched as champions, guides and role models for young people — providing a critical bridge in their pursuit of jobs and continuing education. In five years, the program plans to engage 1,000 older-adult volunteer mentors to serve 1,250 youth annually.
